NOTE: Whitelisted Domains are most successful when paired with relevant Keyword Targets. Domain Targets are unlikely to get traffic in a campaign with Whitelisted Domains. Learn more about the different types of Pops targeting.

Domain Whitelisting is an Audience Filter that restricts your Pops impressions to specific domains. If you ONLY want your Pops campaign(s) to be eligible for impressions from specific domains, you can whitelist those domains.

There are two ways to whitelist domains:

Global Whitelisted Domains apply to ALL of your Pops campaigns. When you add Global Whitelisted Domains, all of your Pops campaigns will be restricted to impressions from the domains you've whitelisted.

Campaign Whitelisted Domains apply to individual Pops campaigns. When you add Campaign Whitelisted Domains, your campaign will be restricted to impressions from the domains you've whitelisted.

How can I use Domain Whitelisting to optimize my campaigns?

Domain Whitelisting gives you more control over the sites serving your ad so you can target with greater flexibility.

Whitelist the domains that you want traffic from, then add Keyword Targets that match specific parts of those domains' URLs to specify which pages can serve your ad.

Here are some ways you can pair Whitelisted Domains with Keyword Targets:

  • Market to consumers as they're shopping for what you're selling. Whitelist domains that sell your product or related products, then add those products as Keyword Targets. This is especially effective if your offer contains a special deal!

  • Reach ready-to-buy consumers just before they make a purchase. Simply whitelist the e-commerce sites you want to target, then add Keyword Targets targeting a specific part of each site's checkout URL.

  • Serve your ad to users searching for what you're selling. By whitelisting search engines and adding Keyword Targets for the search queries your target demographic might be looking for, you'll present your offer to highly relevant, intent-driven audiences.

  • Zero-in on specific topics across multiple sites. For example, if you're selling sports memorabilia for a specific team, you can whitelist sports sites and add Keyword Targets related to your team to reach users as they're reading about that team.

  • Target video content related to your offer. Keyword Targets not only match what's in the URL, but also meta data and other context on the page itself. Video sites are great examples of URLs that don't always contain Keyword Targets related to the content on the page. With Domain Whitelisting, you can whitelist video sites like youtube.com and vimeo.com, then add Keyword Targets related to the video content your target audience likes to watch.

How can I track performance for the domains serving my ad?

Use our reporting suite to see the domains serving your ad and how each performs, or append the {domain} macro to your creative URLs to track domain performance in your third-party tracking platform.

TIP: Install a conversion pixel to track conversions and profit for each domain that serves your ad.

What tips or best practices should I keep in mind when using Whitelisted Domains?

Like any feature that narrows your reach, Whitelisted Domains should be used carefully for best results. Follow these best practices to ensure you're correctly using Whitelisted Domains for success.

Strategically select Whitelisted Domains and Keyword Targets

Whitelisted Domains work best when strategically paired with Keyword Targets.

  • Only whitelist domains if you don't want traffic from any other sites.

  • Whitelist more than one domain. Domain Whitelisting is most effective when your Keyword Targets are able to match multiple domains in your whitelist.

  • Add relevant Keyword Targets, and make sure those Keyword Targets are present in the URLs of the domains you've whitelisted.

  • Avoid adding Domain Targets to a campaign with Whitelisted Domains. These targets will likely not be eligible for traffic.

  • Targeting Run of Network on a campaign with Whitelisted Domains is the same as adding Domain Targets to a campaign without any Whitelisted Domains.

Don't be too restrictive.

Whitelisting domains can significantly restrict your volume. Without sufficient volume, your earnings are limited.

  • Broaden your reach by adding more Keyword Targets and/or whitelisting additional domains.

  • Raise your bids to ensure your ad is shown instead of someone else's.

  • Whitelist higher volume domains.

  • Global Whitelisted Domains will restrict traffic across ALL of your Pops campaigns. Only add Global Whitelisted Domains if all of your Pops campaigns are similar. Otherwise, add Campaign Whitelisted Domains to individual campaigns.

  • Instead of restricting your campaign(s) to a set of high-converting Whitelisted Domains, you can try blacklisting low-converting domains to avoid paying for those impressions.

Make data-driven decisions when whitelisting domains.

In some cases, you may know exactly which sites to whitelist without using data. For example, you might whitelist search engine domains if you know you want to target search queries. If you don't know which domains you should whitelist, your data can point you in the right direction.

  • Identify domains that convert well for a specific subset of Keyword Targets, then whitelist those domains in a new campaign with those Keyword Targets.

  • If all the Keyword Targets in your campaign are closely related, look for domains that convert well across all of your Keyword Targets, then add them to your campaign as Whitelisted Domains.

  • Don't whitelist domains too soon. Wait until your campaign and the domains you'd like to whitelist have gotten significant volume so you can more confidently determine whether the domains should be whitelisted.

What is the difference between adding a Domain Target and whitelisting a domain?

Domain Targets broaden your reach, while Whitelisted Domains narrow your reach.

When you add a Domain Target, your ad will not only be served on that domain, but will also be served on other sites that match the rest of your targets. You can optimize Domain Targets by adjusting their bids. If you find Domain Targets that convert well for your campaign, you can add them as Domain Targets and raise their bids to increase high-converting traffic from those domains.

When you add a Whitelisted Domain, your ad will ONLY be served on that domain, and the URLs that serve your ad must contain your Keyword Targets. You should only whitelist domains when you want your Keyword Targets to match for impressions on a set of specific sites.

What type of domains can be whitelisted?

Whitelisted Domains can only be root domains (example.com), subdomains (page.example.com), or TLDs (.com, .edu, etc).

Root domains you enter will restrict impressions to the root domain, all subdomains, and the full path. For example, adding example.com will also allow impressions from www.example.com, blog.example.com, and example.com/example-blog-post.html, etc.

Subdomains you enter will restrict impressions to the subdomain and its full path, but not the root domain or other subdomains. For example, adding blog.example.com will also allow impressions from blog.example.com/example-blog-post.html, but will not allow impressions from www.example.com or example.com/example-blog-post.html.

TIP: www. is considered a subdomain.

TLDs you add will restrict impressions to all URLs containing that TLD. For example, adding .edu will allow impressions from my-school.edu, another-school.edu, classes.example-school.edu, example.edu/fall2014/enrollment.html, and any other page with a .edu TLD.
