Platform & Device Targeting is a great way to narrow in on a specific audience which can raise your ROI and lower your CPA.

What does Platform & Device Targeting do?

Platform & Device Targeting is a great way to narrow the focus of your campaign and target the specific audiences who are more likely to convert on your offer, which can raise your ROI and lower your CPA. By targeting or excluding traffic from specific device types, mobile device models, operating systems, browsers, connection types, and mobile carriers, you're telling RTX Platform exactly which users you'd like to see your ad.

How can I use Platform & Device Targeting to make more money?

Presenting your offer to the right people is the key to a successful campaign. Conversion rates can vary widely depending on the user's device type, mobile device model, browser, OS, connection type, and mobile carrier. With Platform & Device Targets, you can refine your reach to the traffic that performs best for your unique offer.

Platform & Device Targeting also opens the opportunity to break into new niches. By customizing your Platform & Device Targets, you can earn more from affiliate offers that are restricted to certain types of traffic or only provide payouts for conversions from certain types of users.

Here are some common reasons for using Platform & Device Targets:

  • Your offer is restricted to traffic from specific device types, mobile device models, operating systems, browsers, mobile carriers, or connection types and you want to display your ad only to the type of traffic your offer allows.

  • You're tracking conversions by device type, mobile device model, operating system, browser, mobile carrier, and connection type and you discover that certain types of users convert better than others, so you want to target those high-converting users in a separate campaign with higher bids to maximize ROI and/or exclude traffic from the types of users that convert at lower rates.

  • You have multiple landing pages optimized for specific device types or browsers, and you want to run them in separate campaigns that target the appropriate audience.

  • You're promoting an app that is only compatible with a specific device type or operating system, and you only want to target users who are browsing the web on the device type/OS that supports your app.

  • You're promoting the services of a specific mobile carrier, but don’t want to display your ads to existing customers.

  • You have data-heavy content on your landing page, like a video or interactive content, which loads slowly on certain connection types.

  • You notice traffic from pre-paid mobile carriers performs differently than post-paid mobile carrier traffic and you want to target and optimize separate campaigns uniquely for each subset.

TIP: Once you've fine-tuned your Platform & Device Targets for the most profitable type of traffic for your offer, raise your bids to get even more of the high-converting traffic that works best for your campaign.

What types of users can I reach with Platform & Device Targets?

With Platform & Device Targeting, you can target or exclude traffic that matches specific criteria. The following targeting options can be targeted or excluded from your campaign:

  • Device Type: Desktop, Mobile, Tablet, Other

  • Mobile Device Model: iPhone 7, Samsung Galaxy S8, OnePlus 5, etc.

  • OS: Mac OS, Windows, iOS, Android, Other

  • Browser: Chrome, Firefox, Edge, IE, Safari, Opera, Other

  • Connection Type: Cable/DSL, Cellular, Corporate, Dial-Up, or Unknown

  • Mobile Carrier: AT&T, Sprint, Verizon Fios, etc. (Choose from 80k+ global carriers!)

NOTE: To target specific mobile device models or mobile carriers, your Device Type targeting must allow mobile traffic. If you are targeting specific mobile device models or carriers and you do not have Mobile or All Device Types selected for the Device Type setting in Platform & Device Targets, your campaign will not be eligible for impressions.

How can I track performance for the different types of users I can target?

If you're using a third-party tracking platform to track your campaigns' performance, you can append the {device}, {device_model}, {os}, {browser}, {connection}, and {carrier} macros to your creative URL to capture that information for each impression. You can also view all of this data in our reporting suite.

How can I know how much traffic to expect from my the Platform & Device Targets I've customized?

You might discover that a very specific type of traffic yields the highest ROI, but if that audience is too small, you could be missing out on potential profit.

To help you target the right amount of traffic, volume percentages are available for each device type, mobile device model, OS, browser, connection type, and mobile carrier target. Just click any input field in Platform & Device Targets to expand the dropdown, and the percent of total available requests will be listed for each option.

NOTE: Volume breakdowns reflect how much of the total volume is available for each option. These values do not take into account your Campaign Settings, targets, bids, etc.

How can I customize my Platform & Device Targets?

Follow the instructions below to customize your campaign's Platform & Device Targets:

  1. Log into your RTX Platform account and click the Pops tab in the navigation bar.

  2. Click on the Campaigns tab, and then click the campaign you want to edit.

  3. Click the Campaign Settings tab.

  4. Scroll down to the section labeled Platform & Device Targets. By default, your campaign targets all traffic. To customize the traffic you're targeting, select the Custom radio button, or click any of the targeting fields.

  5. For the traffic criteria you'd like to customize (device type, mobile device model, OS, browser, connection type, mobile carrier) select IS to target only the targeting options you select, or IS NOT to target all traffic except the targeting options you select. Then, choose one or more targeting options from the dropdown, or begin typing to browse options. For example, if you'd like to target only mobile traffic, you'd select IS for the device type and select Mobile as the targeting option. Click the X on any selection to remove it, or click the X on the righthand side of the field to clear all targeting selections. NOTE: All Device Types or Mobile must be selected as a Device Type if you are targeting or specific mobile device models or mobile carriers. If your Device Type Targeting does not include mobile traffic and you choose to target only specific mobile device models or mobile carriers, your campaign will not be eligible for traffic.

  6. Click Save Campaign at the bottom of the page to apply your changes. TIP: RTX Platform will remember your custom Platform & Device Targets if you decide to target all traffic, then want to reapply your custom settings later. If you select Target All after you've customized and saved your Platform & Device Targets, you can always switch back to Custom to restore the Platform & Device Targets you'd previously applied.

NOTE: Platform & Device Targets were originally a feature called Advanced Targeting. The feature was overhauled with a new name and look, plus the addition of volume indicators, Mobile Device Model Targeting, Connection Type Targeting, and Mobile Carrier Targeting.
